Johan de Groot views data as a tool for connection and clarity. As a 5x Tableau Ambassador and leader of the Netherlands Tableau User Group (NLTUG), he has spent over 30 years bridging the gap between technical engineering and human-centric storytelling. His “AntiChaos” philosophy is rooted in the belief that a great visualization is only as strong as the data foundation beneath it.
While he is widely recognized for his visual expertise, Johan’s work is deeply technical. He specializes in the full data lifecycle—from complex data preparation and SQL/Python-driven integrations to deep-dive analysis and NLP-driven experiments. Whether he is architecting Tableau Centers of Excellence or mentoring teams through guest lectures, Johan focuses on transforming raw, chaotic datasets into structured, strategic advantages.+4
I am a Tableau consultant and data visualisation analist who helps organizations turn complex data into clear insights using actionable dashboards.
Through my consulting practice Antichaos, teams and individuals are supported with analytics projects ranging from dashboard development and performance analysis to data integration using APIs and modern data workflows.
Over the years I have worked with organizations that rely on data for daily decision-making – helping them design dashboards that are not only technically solid, but also intuitive, creative and useful for the people who depend on them.
Tableau
My main focus is on Tableau – the data visualization platform – where I combine technical knowledge (SQL, APIs, Python) with strong data visualization principles to create dashboards that actually help people understand their data.
I don’t use Tableau just because it’s pretty – but because it is the most effective tool for visual analysis – the analytical process of finding the “why.”
In the Tableau community I have been recognized as a a Tableau Ambassador five time. I help organize the Netherlands Tableau User Group, where data professionals share ideas, techniques, and real-world experiences, and I’m active on the Tableau Community platform.
Data Analysis, Prepping
Tableau is just a tool – and neither the start or the end of an analysis.
What I focus on is helping organizations turn their data into clear, actionable insights. In practice, that rarely starts with a clean dataset ready for visualization. Data is often fragmented across systems, incomplete, or stored in formats that make analysis difficult.
A big part of my work is therefore about understanding and preparing the data behind the scenes. That can involve connecting APIs, combining datasets, reshaping structures, or finding creative ways to extract useful information from complex systems.
Over the years I’ve worked with many different platforms, databases, and data sources. This broad experience helps me quickly understand how data flows through an organization and where opportunities exist to turn raw data into something meaningful.
Tableau often plays an important role in presenting those insights, but the real value lies in making the data work in the first place.
Background
My journey into data started with a background in Electronics engineering, where I learned to tackle complex systems and solve problems methodically. I put this foundation to work in telecom and IT at companies like Ericsson and IBM, before discovering my passion for understanding people through data in online marketing and analytics at SearchResult and Tribal IM.
In 2012, I took the leap into full-time freelance work. What began as digital analysis quickly evolved into data analytics and Tableau consultancy, helping organizations turn raw numbers into actionable insights and clear visual stories. Today, I combine technical expertise, analytical thinking, and a love for visual storytelling to help clients see their data in a whole new way.
