Tableau Extensions

Tableau Extensions let you add features Tableau doesn’t ship with – custom functionality inside a dashboard, new visualization types on a worksheet, or a bridge to applications outside Tableau altogether.

They run in the browser, on Desktop, Server and Cloud. Nothing to install, nothing to change in your environment.

Available now

Tally (f.k.a. CountTo)

Tally extension icon

Animated KPI counters. The number counts up from zero when the dashboard loads, and again when a filter or parameter changes.

It’s a small thing. It’s also the single most requested piece of polish I get asked for, and doing it in Tableau alone means a stack of calculations that break the moment someone touches the view. Full control over font, number formatting and animation speed. Locale-aware, so 1,234.56 stays 1.234,56.

Latch

Latch extension icon

Latch turns a Tableau parameter into a control that finally looks the part: a polished toggle switch, checkbox, segmented control, or buttons, in your own colours, size and
labels, with twelve switch designs to choose from. Viewers flip it right on the dashboard and every worksheet reacts at once.

Tempo

Tempo extension icon

Tempo keeps your dashboard up-to-date on a timer. Drop it on the dashboard and it re-queries your data sources on a timer, so the wall display, the shared screen and the tab someone left open since breakfast all keep telling the truth. No one has to touch a keyboard.

What is a Tableau extension?

It is an add-on that gives Tableau something it doesn’t do out of the box. There are two kinds: dashboard extensions, which you drag onto a dashboard like any other object, and viz extensions, which add new chart types.

Underneath, it’s a small web application running inside your dashboard. It can read what Tableau gives it and react to filters and parameters. It works on Desktop, Server and Cloud, and there’s nothing to install on anyone’s machine.

Questions

Does this work on Tableau Server and Tableau Cloud?

Yes. Desktop, Server and Cloud. Your Tableau admin may need to add the extension’s URL to the safe list first – that’s a one-time setting.

Where does my data go?

Nowhere. The extension runs in your browser and reads what Tableau gives it. Nothing leaves the page.

What happens when a license expires (where applicable)?

Your dashboards keep working, but they fall back to non-licensed mode.

“I have an idea for an extension!”

Tell me about it. Most of what’s on this page started as someone describing a problem they’d been working around for months. If it’s something more people run into, I’ll probably build it. Get in touch.
